Couples counselling is a form of therapy which focuses on working on the relationship, rather than the individual or individuals in the relationship. By placing the relationship at the centre of the work, it enables various issues within the relationship to be addressed, for communication between the couple to be improved and for better empathy and understanding to develop.
Like counselling generally, there are many different types of technique used within session, dependent on the counsellors particular training e.g. the Gottman Method or Imago.
Contrary to popular belief, couples counselling is not only something to be undertaken when a problem has arisen within the relationship, such as an infidelity or a breach of trust. Rather it is seen nowadays by many couples as being something to invest in early on in the relationship as a way of strengthening bonds and even ‘bullet proofing’ the relationship.
